This new offering aims to integrate AI into various campus operations, providing a robust tool for students, faculty, researchers, and administrative tasks. Powered by the advanced GPT-4o, ChatGPT Edu can process and reason across both text and visual data, utilising sophisticated tools like data analysis, said OpenAI in its blog announcement. OpenAI emphasizes that this version includes enterprise-level security and controls, making it a secure and affordable option for educational institutions. The AI firm said the decision to develop ChatGPT Edu stems from the success seen with ChatGPT Enterprise at prominent universities such as the University of Oxford, Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, University of Texas at Austin, Arizona State University, and Columbia University in the City of New York. In their announcement, OpenAI highlighted, “We’re announcing ChatGPT Edu, a version of ChatGPT built for universities to responsibly deploy AI to students, faculty, researchers, and campus operations.” The platform is designed to assist with a variety of tasks on campus. These include personalized tutoring for students, resume reviews, helping researchers with grant applications, and supporting faculty with grading and feedback. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman pointed out that the introduction of ChatGPT Edu is in response to the growing demand and innovative usage of AI in educational settings. This new model aims to broaden the deployment of AI technologies in academic environments, ensuring that both students and staff can benefit from cutting-edge AI tools. OpenAI added that “ChatGPT Edu represents OpenAI’s commitment to expanding the accessibility and functionality of AI in education, providing institutions with a powerful resource to enhance learning and operational efficiency”.
