UAE authorities have imprisoned two men for violating the precautionary measures aimed at curbing the spread of Covid-19, the Public Prosecution announced on Sunday.

The UAE Federal Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Prosecution ordered the imprisonment of the individuals for flouting quarantine requirements and not wearing masks.

The authority stated that the Abu Dhabi Police monitored a video of two young men entering a shopping mall in the emirate and filming themselves without wearing face masks. They were also wearing smart tracking watches used for those in quarantine and hence “violating the precautionary measures in a boastful manner”, a statement said.

“Legal action was immediately taken against the two men, who were imprisoned pending an investigation,” the Federal Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Prosecution said.

The authority also urged the public to adhere to relevant precautionary measures and regulations to avoid being subject to legal action.

The UAE has strict penalties in place for those found violating Covid-19 measures.

Under the law, those violating or refraining from installing, registering smart apps, or carrying the electronic tracking devices used for tracking isolation or quarantine cases, or those who lose, destroy or disrupt the network or connection will be fined Dhs10,000 and charged the value of the electronic tracking device.

Those who lose the electronic tracking device or destroy it shall also be fined Dhs1,000, in addition to being charged the value of the device.
