Sharjah Electricity, Water and Gas Authority’s (SEWA) Electricity Distribution department carried out 35 road and street lighting projects last year.

According to state news agency WAM, the projects included the installation of 7,132 new lighting poles, laying 215 km of cables, installing 97 lighting boxes, 30,497 lighting network maintenance works carried out, and 114,97 lighting units installed, the majority of which are energy-saving.

These activities were carried out as part of the authority’s efforts to design and implement road lighting networks across the emirate.

Dr. Engineer Hassan Al Zarooni, director of the Electricity Distribution Department said SEWA is keen to use energy-saving lamps and flashlights in the implementation of lighting projects in Sharjah, to improve energy efficiency and support its efforts to achieve sustainability through the conservation of energy consumption, reduce maintenance costs and reduce the carbon footprint.

Al Zarooni highlighted that these efforts are in line with the vision and directives of Dr. Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

He added that SEWA continues to provide efficient services to residents, along with projects throughout Sharjah, pointing out that the lighting projects are among the vital and necessary projects that expand security and safety for residents, as well as drivers on the roads.

In January, SEWA announced that its Energy Transmission department had completed and commenced operations of nine power transmission stations, as well as a number of development projects and network improvements worth over Dhs480.8m in 2021.
