Saudi-led coalition forces intercepted and destroyed eight ‘bomb-laden’ drones and three ballistic missiles launched towards the kingdom from Yemen on Monday.

The attacks were launched by the Houthis in Yemen and were targeting “civilians in the kingdom”, official Saudi Press Agency quoted Turki Al-Malki, the spokesman of the coalition in Yemen as saying.

The three ballistic missiles were launched from Yemen’s Sa’dah province towards Najran (two) and Jazan (one), the report said.

The “terrorist attempts” by the Houthis that target “innocent civilians” in residential areas, threaten the lives of hundreds of people in a “deliberate, systematic manner and purposely cause major damage using bomb-laden UAVs, which is a flagrant defiance of the customary international humanitarian law”, said Al-Malki.

The coalition will continue to “apply and implement all necessary measures to protect innocent civilians, and rigorous and appropriate operational procedures to stop these acts of terror”, he added.

Saudi Arabia has faced several attacks from Yemen in recent years.

In late March, two civilians in Riyadh were “slightly injured” after being hit by the debris of a ballistic missile fired from Yemen.

The missile, which was intercepted and destroyed by the Royal Saudi Air Defense, exploded in mid-air over residential districts.
