RTA awards Dhs600m contract for Oud Metha, Al Asayel road development

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a $163.4m (Dhs600m) contract for the upgrade of Oud Metha and Al Asayel roads as part of the broader Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project that seeks to accommodate the city’s expanding urban landscape and growing population.

The development project connects Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road via Al Nawras Street and provides an exit to Oud Metha and Al Nawras Streets.

RTA will build four major intersections as part of the upgrade, 4,300 metres of bridges, and 14 km of roads as part of the Oud Metha and Al Asayel road upgrade. The development will serve residential and commercial areas, including Zabeel, Al Jaddaf, Oud Metha, Umm Hurair, Latifa Hospital and Al Wasl Club.

The Oud Metha and Al Asayel road upgrade project is expected to serve more than 420,000 people by the end of the decade. It will significantly enhance the capacity of Oud Metha Street, increasing it from 10,400 vehicles per hour to 15,600 cars per hour, a 50 per cent improvement.

Similarly, travel time on the route will be reduced from 20 minutes to just 5 minutes, a 75 per cent reduction.

The project also includes increasing the number of lanes on the existing bridge from two to three lanes expanding its capacity from 2,200 vehicles per hour to 3,300 vehicles per hour. The upgrade is expected to alleviate traffic congestion on Al Khail Road and Oud Metha Street.

RTA’s Oud Metha Street, Al Asayel upgrade

RTA has outlined specific plans for the Oud Metha and Al Asayel road upgrade. The project will involve the construction of four major intersections, each with significant improvements to traffic flow and capacity.

Located at the intersection of Oud Metha Street and Sheikh Rashid Street, the first intersection will see the addition of a left-turn lane, improvements to the service road, and an increase in the number of right-turn lanes.

The second intersection, located at the junction of Oud Metha Street with Al Asayel and Al Nawras Streets, will feature the construction of two bridges connecting Al Asayel Street to Al Khail Road.

Similarly, the third intersection, located at the intersection of Al Nawras Street and Al Khail Road, will see the construction of a two-lane bridge and upgrades to Al Nawras Street.

The fourth intersection, located at the junction of Zabeel Palace Street with Al Khail and Oud Metha Street, will see the addition of a left-turn lane and a single-lane tunnel.

The Al Asayel Street Development is part of the Sheikh Rashid Corridor Development Project, a major strategic road project being undertaken by the RTA.

Previously, the authority expanded the Ras Al Khor Road from three lanes to six lanes in each direction, covering 8 km and including the construction of several bridges totalling 2,000 meters.
