The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a Dhs700m contract for a major upgrade to Al Khail Road, a key traffic corridor in the city.

Mattar Al Tayer, director general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of RTA, said, “Al Khail Road Improvement Project stands out among the strategic projects aimed to enhance the capacity of roads that run parallel to and support Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and Emirates Road. Al Khail Road is one of Dubai’s key traffic corridors stretching from Business Bay crossing to its junction with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, encompassing six lanes in each direction.”

The project aims to improve traffic flow, and reduce congestion.

The project will see the construction of  3,300 metres of bridges, including seven new bridges at strategic locations across the road. Road improvements over 6,820 metres, will include widening lanes, enhancing intersections, and upgrading surface roads.

The project is expected to accommodate an additional 19,600 vehicles per hour and contribute to a 30 per cent reduction in travel times for motorists.

Targeted locations for the Al Khail Road project

The project will focus on seven key locations along Al Khail Road, including:

  • Zabeel (between Oud Metha Street and Financial Centre Street)
  • Meydan (between Al Meydan Road and Ras Al Khor Road)
  • Al Quoz 1 (between Al Meydan Road and Al Waha Street)
  • Ghadeer Al Tair (between Al Meydan Road and Latifa bint Hamdan Street)
  • Jumeirah Village Circle (between Hessa Street and Al Khamila Street)
  • Al Jaddaf
  • Business Bay entrance

The project is expected to be completed within a specific timeframe, though the exact date was not mentioned.

This project builds upon the previous Al Khail Road Improvement Project completed in 2012, which transformed roundabouts into flyovers and widened the road to six lanes in each direction.
