Oman implements distance learning for schools due to heavy rainfall

Oman’s weather agency warned of heavy rains and thunderstorms on Thursday, May 2.

In its weather alert, Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority forecast thunderstorms and rainfall of varying intensities starting 10 am on Thursday.

It warned that eight governorates such as Muscat, Dhofar, Al Buraimi would be impacted by the weather system.

Education authorities in Oman announced distance learning for all educational institutions due unstable weather conditions on May 2. Classes were scheduled to resume on Sunday, May 5.

The directive was applicable to both public and private schools in the country.

Oman suffered casualties in the last bout of storms on April 13-16. 17 people died due to flash floods caused by heavy rainfall in the country.

GCC-wide weather alert

The unstable weather condition impacting Oman has been felt across other GCC countries as well. Schools in Riyadh were moved to remote learning on May 1 due to heavy rainfall.

Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defence has issued red alerts for multiple parts of the kingdom such as Medinah, and Makkah as heavy rains caused flooding and water accumulation on streets.
