Oman: 5.3 magnitude earthquake recorded in Dhofar Governorate

An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.3 hit the Wilayat of Shaleem and Al Hallaniyat Islands in Oman’s Dhofar Governorate on Wednesday.

The Times of Oman, quoted the Earthquake Monitoring Centre (EMC) to report that the earthquake hit at 1:05am local time and was centred about 190 kilometres away from Salalah.

Earthquake hits close to surface

The EMC at Sultan Qaboos University said the quake was recorded at a depth of 4 kilometres, an extremely shallow earthquake.

Meanwhile, the UAE’s National Centre of Metereology put the earthquake at 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

However, the US Geological Society recorded the earthquake at a depth of 10 kilometres and at a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter scale.
