With a net worth of $3.7bn, Algerian businessman Issad Rebrab is the sixth richest person in Africa. But it’s been a tough year for the Cevital boss. Having built Algeria’s largest private group, with interests in agro-food, retail, industry and services, his power grew to astronomic heights – especially with his acquisition of El Khabar media group in 2016, and his purchase of daily newspaper Liberte prior to that. But recently he has endured struggles with the government, which has curbed his growth, leading him to bemoan the “invisible hand” that is blocking his projects. Thus, 2018 saw Rebrab look elsewhere to develop his projects, with France a possible destination.
