Saudi’s first female filmmaker Haifaa Al Mansour burst onto the arts scene in 1997 with a seires of three short films entitled Who? But it was her feature debut Wadjda in 2012 that thrust her into the spotlight, bringing fame and controversy in equal parts. Her 2017 biopic Mary Shelley was followed up in 2018 by huge Netflix success Nappily Ever After, and earlier this year she was presented with the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award for being an “exceptional cultural leader”. High praise indeed for the iconic director.
