Al Rajhi defines the phrase ‘self- made man’, having reportedly worked as a porter, cleaner, cook and office boy before founding what was to become one of the world’s largest Islamic banks with his brothers. Despite becoming a billionaire along the way he is said to have resisted the luxuries of the wealthy and still lives a modest life. Instead much of his fortune has been dedicated to philanthropy and he is recognised as one of the world’s largest charitable donors. These plans took a step up in 2013 when he donated his 19.7 per cent stake in Al Rajhi Bank, worth nearly $5.5bn, to an endowment dedicated to charitable causes. Three years later he pledged to donate two- thirds of his wealth to charity and the foundation that bears his name has sought to make this a reality by supporting 2.5 million people across more than 1,200 charity projects.
