Carlos Slim held the position of the world’s richest man from 2010 to 2013 but has since fallen down the ladder in part due to a surge in the wealth of US tech moguls. The 77-year-old billionaire made his name with an investment in Mexico’s Telmex in 1990 and later forged the South American telecoms group America Movil, along with interests in construction, real state, mining and consumer goods. This portfolio saw the net worth of Slim, who was born in Mexico to Lebanese parents, increase from $54.4bn to $65.9bn from March 2017 to January 2018, according to Forbes. During the same period he pledged through his philanthropic organisations to donate 5 pesos for every peso donated by the public to help victims of Mexico’s deadliest earthquake in 42 years and sold off more than half of his 17 per cent stake in the New York Times, making a tidy profit in the process as the company’s share price had risen 50 per cent since his 2015 investment.
