Oman has declared that Sunday, March 22 will be observed as a public holiday to mark Isra’a wal Miraj.

The Civil Service Council said that Sunday will be an official holiday for employees at ministries, public authorities and other departments, reported Oman News Agency (ONA).

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Manpower also confirmed that March 22 will be observed as a holiday for all private sector employees.

The decision allows employers and employees to agree on compensation for the holiday if necessary, the report added.

Isra’a wal Miraj, also known as the Prophet’s Ascension or the Night Journey, marks the journeys of Prophet Mohammed from Makkah to Jerusalem and to heaven in a single night.

Last year, the UAE Cabinet passed a new decree listing all the public holidays in the country and Isra’a wal Miraj, which was previously observed as public holiday, was not listed.

Under the decree, public and private sector companies in the UAE will have the same number of national holidays.

The next confirmed public holiday in the UAE is Eid Al Fitr, likely to fall in the last week of May.
