Etihad Airways and flynas are gearing up to list on local stock markets this year, marking the first IPOs by Gulf carriers in nearly two decades, with Etihad sounding out investors next week ahead of a potential sale of around a 20 per cent stake, two sources said.

Etihad is looking at a listing this quarter, the people with knowledge of its plans said, with one of them saying the airline would target both local and international investors.

It could raise around $1bn in what would be the first airline IPO in the GCC region since Kuwait’s Jazeera Airways in 2008, one of the two people and a third source said.

Saudi Arabia’s budget carrier flynas, backed by Kingdom Holding, the investment company of billionaire Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, could also list this year, another person familiar with its plans said.

Qatar Airways, one of the region’s biggest carriers, could go public before the decade is out.

The four people declined to be identified because the plans are confidential.

Etihad and its owner, Abu Dhabi’s sovereign wealth fund ADQ, declined to comment. Flynas did not respond to a request for comment.

Kingdom Holding’s CEO told Saudi state-owned broadcaster Al Arabiya TV on Wednesday that the company was in the final stage of getting approval from the Saudi market regulator to list in Riyadh.

Flynas is worth at least $2bn, Prince Alwaleed posted on X earlier this month.

Dubai’s Emirates has also previously been flagged as a potential IPO candidate. Its chairman and chief executive, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, told reporters last year that an IPO was not his decision but that the Dubai government would make the decision. He said he would go ahead if asked to do so.

Etihad, flynas rides on tourism

The potential listings are driven in part by the local governments’ efforts to diversify their economies away from oil, betting on sectors like tourism as international travel revives after the pandemic.

The IPOs would allow investors to access a market with significant growth potential, aviation analyst John Strickland said, citing hub capability due to a geographic location between Europe and Asia, plus Dubai’s attractions as a tourist destination.

Dubai is already a major stopover point for long-haul flights after overtaking Heathrow as the world’s busiest airport for international traffic a decade ago.

Etihad has been through a multi-year restructuring and management shake-up after investing billions of dollars to compete more effectively with Gulf peers by buying minority stakes in other carriers.

The launch of a multibillion-dollar new terminal at Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport in 2023 tripled the hub’s annual capacity to 45 million passengers and could help the airline’s growth plans.

Etihad has said it is working to expand destinations to more than 125 airports by 2030 from more than 90 today and boost its fleet under a plan to strengthen the UAE capital’s role as a travel hub connecting Asia and Europe.

“Markets are vibrant, valuations (for regional companies) are high,” said Mohamed Ali Yasin, founder and CEO of investment consultancy firm Oracle Financial Consultancy and Investments.

In Saudi Arabia, where tourism is a major pillar of the Vision 2030 economic overhaul, the nearly 20-year-old flynas is planning to expand its fleet to more than 160 aircraft by 2030 from over 60.

Despite local competition from the likes of low-cost player flyadeal, flynas has all the credentials to grow further, Strickland said, citing the size and potential of the Saudi market backed by a young, growing population.

The Middle East, which had a 9.4 per cent share of the global air passenger market in 2023 – calculated as revenue per kilometre – had an 8.7 per cent increase in demand in November 2024 compared to the same month a year earlier, according to IATA.

Other regions still accounted for larger shares of the overall market, with Asia Pacific topping the list with a 31.7 per cent share, according to the data.

A bright spot for IPOs

The Gulf accounted for the vast majority of the 54 IPOs in the Middle East and North Africa in 2024, which raised $12.2bn, up 12 per cent from a year earlier, according to LSEG data.

The Gulf listings could become a bright spot for investors in an airline sector that has faced problems in other regions, including Europe, where airlines such as Lufthansa have struggled with plane delivery delays, engine troubles, labour disruption and surging costs.

“Coming out of COVID, some of the Gulf carriers were amongst the first ones to really start recovering and get the market going again,” Strickland said.

Europe “is tied up in regulation, climate change focus, even changes, of course, in the political landscape.”

Etihad Rail has announced plans to build the UAE’s first high-speed, all-electric passenger train, which will connect Abu Dhabi and Dubai.

Revealed on Thursday, the train is expected to cut travel time between the two emirates to just 30 minutes.

The high-speed train, which will travel at 350kmph, will pass through six stations: Reem Island, Saadiyat, Yas Island, Zayed International Airport in Abu Dhabi, and Al Maktoum International Airport and Al Jaddaf in Dubai.

Additionally, a regular passenger train will connect all the emirates, extending its reach to the UAE-Oman border and eventually linking to the broader GCC Railway network.

The high-speed train project is still in its planning phase, with infrastructure to be built after the tendering process concludes.

Speaking at a media briefing in Abu Dhabi, Mohammed Al Shehhi, Chief Projects Officer at Etihad Rail, noted that there is no confirmed timeline for when the train will be operational.

The regular passenger train, which will travel at 200kmph and accommodate up to 400 passengers, will connect cities across all seven emirates.

It will run along the same tracks as the existing cargo trains, with key stations in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, and Fujairah. The route will also pass through Mezeira’a, the Liwa Desert, and its famous oasis, offering a scenic journey.

The regular-speed train is part of the UAE’s wider rail connectivity strategy and will play a vital role in linking the emirates and supporting the future GCC Railway.

While the trains are ready, the official timeline for the start of operations has not yet been disclosed.

Just as the UAE was a leader in pearl diving 150 years ago, the country is now aiming to become the number one nation in artificial intelligence, according to the country’s Minister of AI.

The UAE has been seamlessly incorporating AI into people’s daily lives, Omar Sultan Al Olama, Minister of State for Artificial Intelligence, Digital Economy, and Remote Work Applications, said at the Oracle CloudWorld Tour, held in Dubai on Wednesday, January 22nd.

A clear example of this is the seamless passage of travelers through Dubai Airport (DXB). Passengers can move through the smart tunnel or smart gates, exiting the plane without interacting with a single human or showing their passports. After experiencing that, any other airport in the world feels slow and inefficient.

“That’s the power of AI when deployed effectively”, Al Olama reiterated.

Digital Dubai

Digital Dubai also represents the city’s fourth revolution, building on the Dubai government’s vision and the smart city mission.

“One major achievement has been the launch of a unified medical system in 2017, where most city processes are integrated, allowing for seamless interactions within the government’s digital ecosystem. This has greatly improved service delivery and reduced inefficiencies”, Khalifa Al Marris, CEO of Shared Government Service Sector, Digital Dubai Government Establishment, Digital Dubai said at the keynote session at the Oracle CloudWorld Tour.

Dubai has already established itself as a leader in digital transformation. Many other governments are now looking at its model to improve their own operations and enhance service delivery, Al Marris emphasised.

AI-driven growth

According to a sectoral report, issued by the Abu Dhabi Chamber of Commerce and Industry (February 2024), the following UAE sectors are expected to grow astronomically through the incorporation of AI strategies into their day-to-day functioning:

  • The adoption of AI in the financial sector is expected to increase GDP by 14 per cent by 2035
  • The healthcare market size is expected to witness an expansion of CAGR (Compounded Annual Growth Rate) 42 per cent to reach over Dhs3bn by 2029
  • The tourism and hospitality sector of the UAE is also expected to generate an estimated output increase in current prices of Dhs3bn by 2030
  • The construction arm of the UAE economy is also primed to add Dhs39bn upon the integration of AI tools into its functioning
  • The world as we see it today is jumping on the AI bandwagon, with the UAE leading the way to becoming a world leader in this technology.

This is evident in the fact that the UAE is the only country in the world to have had a minister for AI since 2017 and the UAE government ranks 18th on the Oxford AI Readiness Index 2021 out of 160 countries.

According to a PwC report, the potential impact of AI for the Middle East is expected to be $320bn by 2030, with the UAE expected to see the largest impact of close to 14 per cent of 2030 GDP.

Emirates has announced the launch of its Premium Economy product on flights EK434 and 435 between Dubai and Brisbane, starting February 1.

The service will operate three times a week, marking the addition of Brisbane to Emirates’ growing list of Australian cities offering the upgraded cabin class.

Emirates has been serving Brisbane for over 22 years and currently operates double daily flights between Dubai and the Queensland city.

Premium Economy upgrade for Emirates’ customers in Queensland

With the introduction of Premium Economy on flights EK434 and435, Brisbane joins Sydney and Melbourne in the Emirates’ Australian network to be served by retrofitted aircraft equipped with the airline’s award-winning product.

Queenslanders will now have access to the carrier’s ‘premium’ services, including refreshed interiors and enhanced cabins across all classes.

Premium Economy by Emirates

“By April 1, Emirates will be serving Australia with close to 4,000 Premium Economy seats,” said the airline in a statement.

The carrier will offer Premium Economy on two daily services from Sydney and Melbourne, and a third Melbourne service starting March 30 with a retrofitted Boeing 777 on flights EK404/405. The Brisbane service will be part of Emirates’ broader expansion of Premium Economy across its Australian routes.

The Premium Economy product will also be available on flights to popular destinations around the world, such as London, Vienna, Osaka and Riyadh, all connecting via Dubai.
