Major road improvement project 75% complete, shares RTA

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is making significant strides in enhancing the city’s road network infrastructure with the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Roads Improvement Project. The project is now 75 per cent complete.

The project aims to accommodate the city’s urban and population growth, ensuring seamless traffic flow amid increasing demands.

Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at RTA, said the project involves the construction of four bridges spanning a total of 2,874 metres.

These bridges are strategically designed to handle a traffic capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour, a critical aspect of managing Dubai’s bustling traffic.

The road improvement project will ease traffic flow

Al Tayer emphasised the project’s significance in optimising traffic flow between key routes such as Sheikh Zayed Road, Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, First Al Khail Road, and Al Asayel Street.

Once completed, the road improvement project is expected to reduce journey times significantly, with peak-hour travel times expected to be slashed by up to 40 per cent.

Detailing the specifics of the project, Al Tayer highlighted the construction of four bridges, each serving a distinct purpose in facilitating smoother traffic flow across the city.

These bridges accommodate varying volumes of vehicles, with capacities ranging from 3,200 to 8,000 vehicles per hour, catering to the diverse traffic needs of Dubai’s residents and commuters.

• The first bridge spans 943 metres at the intersection of Garn Al Sabkha Street and Al Asayel Street, boasting two lanes in each direction and accommodating 8,000 vehicles per hour in both directions.
• The second bridge, extending 601 metres, consists of two lanes and serves traffic moving from Garn Al Sabkha Street East towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, and North towards Al Qusais and Deira, with a capacity of 3,200 vehicles per hour.
• The third bridge, a two-lane structure stretching 664 metres, ensures smooth traffic flow by eliminating overlapping traffic from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road heading North to Al Yalayis Street, with a capacity of approximately 3,200 vehicles per hour.
• Lastly, the fourth bridge spans 666 metres and consists of two lanes, aiding traffic flow from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to the entrances of Dubai Production City, also accommodating 3,200 vehicles per hour.

The road improvement project also includes extensive road works covering a distance of 7 kilometres, along with enhancements to surface intersections, street lighting, traffic signs, and drainage systems.

This comprehensive approach aligns with RTA’s Master Plan to upgrade strategic road networks and arterial routes, ensuring efficient transportation infrastructure to support Dubai’s ongoing development projects.

In other news, RTA recently awarded a Dhs700m contract for a major upgrade to Al Khail Road.

The road improvement project aims to improve traffic flow and reduce congestion.

The project will see the construction of  3,300 metres of bridges, including seven new bridges at strategic locations across the road.

Road improvements over 6,820 metres, will include widening lanes, enhancing intersections, and upgrading surface roads.
