Floods hit several regions of the UAE, including Sharjah, Fujairah and Ras al-Khaimah, due to heavy and incessant rains since July 27.

In light of the current adverse weather conditions, the National Emergency, Crisis and Disasters Management Authority (NCEMA), the Ministry of Interior and the National Centre for Meteorology held a special media briefing on July 28, at 4:30 pm.

They assured everyone during the briefing that ” despite the heavy rain and volatile weather conditions, which caused floods in some areas, no casualties or severe injuries have been reported. Police, rescue and ambulance teams are continuously exerting all efforts to secure and protect people and properties and regulate traffic flawlessly. Some 870 people were rescued in Sharjah and Fujairah. ” However they urged people to drive cautiously and avoid flooded areas and harsh mountainous areas.

They also requested people “to follow the news reports, instructions and warnings from the relevant authorities and not untrusted sources. “20 warnings were issued since the start of the conditions while 70 alerts were issued on social media and other media. The center communicates regularly with relevant authorities and all repercussions are dealt with quickly and professionally, as preserving the safety of people and property is a top priority,” they added.

Meanwhile, in Fujairah, the Dubai Police emergency team joined rescue operations to help people affected by heavy rains. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai directed the Ministry of Interior to deploy rescue teams from all nearby emirates to support Fujairah and the eastern regions of the country.

The Dubai Ruler has further directed the Ministry of Community Development to accommodate all affected families to temporary shelter sites and nearby hotels.

The National Centre of Meteorology predicts, there will be a chance of rainclouds again on Thursday, July 28. These formations will occur over some Eastern and Western areas during the daytime, with a gradual increase in temperatures. They asked people to be alert and extremely vigilant if they go for outdoor activities, as hazardous weather events are expected.

Meanwhile, non-essential employees working in areas affected by rains and floods  will be allowed to work remotely on Thursday and Friday, as announced by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MOHRE). It issued the same notice to private sector establishments as well.

The transportation for essential employees between their workplace and residence must be counted as within their working hours on these two days, the Ministry said in a statement.

The Abu Dhabi Media office also urged all citizens and residents to drive with caution, adhere to safety instructions and speed limits, and follow official weather forecasts for the latest updates to protect public safety.

Several wadis and dams in Ras Al Khaimah overflowed after heavy rains hit the country. Videos tweeted by Storm Centre showed floos in many areas of the emirate, with footage.
