UAE announces Hijri New Year date

The UAE has announced that the first day of Muharram, marking the Hijri New Year, will fall on Saturday, August 31.

The announcement was made by the Federal Authority For Government Human Resources (FAHR) on Friday night.

“In light of the announcement of the relevant authorities in the government that Saturday is the first day of Muharram 1441 H, the Hijri New Year’s holiday will be observed on Saturday, August 31. Regular working hours will resume on Sunday, September 1,” a message on Twitter said.

The UAE had earlier declared that Hijri New Year will be a holiday for public and private sector workers in the country.

The RTA has also announced that public parking will be free on the holiday – corresponding to Saturday.

Under a new decree approved by the UAE Cabinet in March, public and private sector companies in the UAE will have the same number of national holidays this year and in 2020.

Isra wal Miraj and the Prophet’s birthday – which were previously observed as public holidays – have not been listed.
