Over 2.04 million people used public transport in Dubai during the New Year’s Eve 2019 celebrations, registering a 10 per cent increase over last year’s total ridership, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) revealed.

The Dubai Metro – through its Red and Green lines – carried 866,851 people while users of the Dubai Tram reached 33,235. While a total of 428,549 people used public buses, 659,134 took taxis on NYE.

Different marine transport modes carried 61,449 people on New Year’s Eve.

Dubai held a spectacular celebration to usher in 2019, with fireworks in several locations including the Burj Khalifa, Burj Al Arab, Global Village, Atlantis The Palm and Dubai Festival City.

The show at the Burj Khalifa, which was themed ‘time and progression’, attracted more than one million revellers to Downtown Dubai.

It saw over 9,400 fireworks fired from 2,017 positions, according to developer Emaar.

The New Year’s Eve celebration also featured the ‘longest show to date of The Dubai Fountain’.
