Scheduled for completion in 2025, the new facility will feature a capacity of 6 megawatts. This centre marks a big step for Vodafone and DAMAC The collaboration marks a significant milestone for both companies. Aqil Ali, vice chairman and board member of EDGNEX, highlighted the project’s importance in providing vital digital infrastructure for the growing western Turkish market. He emphasised Izmir’s strategic location and the high demand for data centres in the Eastern Mediterranean region. Engin Aksoy, CEO of Vodafone Turkey, spotlighted the company’s significant role in the Turkish economy, with investments exceeding TL157.6bn over 17 years. He outlined Vodafone’s ambitious growth plans, focusing on data centres, cloud solutions, cybersecurity, and mobile private networks. Aksoy stressed the importance of reliable and high-capacity data centres for cloud computing and Turkey’s participation in the growing global market. He added: “Our goal through this strategic partnership is to develop data centre facilities in both Turkey and international markets. The data centre we are set to build in Izmir will be our primary joint project. We expect the total investment amount to reach $100m. The data centre will be a major milestone in our technology investments. Vodafone will continue to leverage its global experience and local capabilities to contribute to the sustainable growth of our country.” Tier 3 Standards and Green Technology The Izmir data centre will be built to meet Tier 3 standards, ensuring the highest levels of uptime, redundancy and fault tolerance. It will incorporate the latest technology, be earthquake-resistant and utilise green energy sources whenever possible. Izmir’s proximity to submarine cable transit hubs offers excellent connectivity to Europe, Africa, and Asia. The ongoing development of submarine cables in the region further enhances the data centre’s appeal for internet exchange points and content delivery networks. The carrier-independent data centre will cater to a broad range of customers, including content creators, wholesale service providers, and businesses requiring disaster recovery services. It will serve as a one-stop-shop for the region, connecting to Europe via both terrestrial and submarine cables. This comprehensive offering positions the centre as a vital hub for OTT and hyperscaler segments seeking alternative geographical routes for data centre services.
