A rare solar eclipse – occurring in the UAE for the first time after more than 172 years – was witnessed by several residents in the country early on Thursday morning.

The annular ‘ring of fire’ solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes over the centre of the sun, creating a bright circle on the edges.

The event takes place when the moon is farthest from Earth.

Special arrangements and viewing centres were set up throughout the country to enable people to witness the spectacle safely.

The eclipse lasted for roughly two hours in the UAE.

A popular spot for sky gazers was the observation deck at the top of the world’s highest tower, Burj Khalifa, where the Dubai Astronomy Group arranged for a special viewing.

The Astronomy group also streamed a live viewing of the eclipse on YouTube.

The next such event is set to take place in the UAE after 83 years.
