UAE issues warning over New York flash floods, state of emergency

The UAE Consulate in New York City issued an alert to citizens over the flash floods that have inundated the tri-state area in the US, since Friday, September 29.

UAE authorities warned Emiratis to follow the news, and urged citizens to adhere to official advisories to stay safe.

On its Twitter page, the UAE Consulate in New York City, said: “Attention #UAE Nationals in #NewYork: A Flash Flood Warning has been issued for the State of #NewYork today. Your safety is our priority. Please stay informed by following your local news updates and strictly adhere to all official advisories issued by local authorities.

In case of emergency, dial 911 and do not hesitate to contact the Consulate at 212 419 7670”

Flash flood warning for New York

Torrential rain have caused widespread flooding across the city that closed roads, disrupted subway service and overwhelmed basements in the New York City.

“This is a dangerous weather condition and it is not over,” New York City Mayor Eric Adams said at a Friday morning news briefing.

“I don’t want those gaps in heavy rain to give the appearance that it is over, it is not.”

A month’s worth of rain, over four inches, fell over parts of Brooklyn in just three hours.

Intense rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour were falling across the region, and the National Weather Service warned that rain in excess of eight inches “is increasingly likely” in parts of the tri-state area.

New York state governor Kathy Hochul declared a state of emergency for the New York City area as public infrastructure from roads to airports were inundated.

I am declaring a State of Emergency across New York City, Long Island, and the Hudson Valley due to the extreme rainfall we’re seeing throughout the region.

Please take steps to stay safe and remember to never attempt to travel on flooded roads.
