The UAE Ministry of Interior has announced a one-day initiative aimed at helping motorists reduce up to four black points from their driving licence fines.

The campaign, titled ‘Accident-Free Day,’ is scheduled for August 26 and coincides with the beginning of the new school year. The initiative is part of a broader national effort to promote safe driving and prevent traffic accidents, particularly on the first day of school.

An incentive to drive safely

Led by the Federal Traffic Council and the General Command of Police, the campaign encourages motorists to adhere to traffic laws and avoid any violations or accidents on the designated day.

Those who successfully participate in the ‘Accident-Free Day’ campaign will be eligible for a reduction of four black points, which will be applied two weeks after the event as an incentive for continued safe driving throughout the year.

Brigadier Engineer Hussein Ahmed Al Harithi, chairman of the Federal Traffic Council, highlighted that this initiative is a key component of the Ministry’s strategy to enhance road safety, in line with the UAE government’s vision.

He emphasised that the primary goal of the campaign is to foster a culture of responsible driving.

This includes educating motorists on crucial safety measures, such as adhering to speed limits, especially near schools, avoiding distractions like mobile phones, following traffic lane discipline, maintaining safe distances, prioritising pedestrians, and giving way to emergency vehicles.

The Ministry of Interior has urged both drivers and parents to strictly observe traffic laws on August 26 and beyond, to ensure the success of the campaign.

Black points are penalties imposed on drivers for serious traffic offences, with the number of points varying based on the severity of the violation.

Accumulating 24 black points within 12 months can lead to licence suspension, with the suspension duration determined by the nature of the offences.

There are 143 federal traffic laws in the UAE, with penalties that include fines, black points, vehicle confiscation, and licence suspension, applicable across all emirates.
