The UAE has said that its peace treaty with Israel will not be at the expense of the Palestinian cause.

The remarks were made during a remote meeting of the Arab League foreign ministers on Wednesday, during which Dr Anwar Gargash, UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, said that the UAE supported the establishment of a Palestinian state based on its borders as of June 4, 1967 – a day before the Six-Day War began in which Israel captured several Palestinian territories.

Also, he reiterated that the UAE supports the position of recognising East Jerusalem as the capital of the Palestinian state, reported official news agency WAM.

At the same meeting, Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan too stated the kingdom’s support for recognising East Jerusalem as the capital and added that the Kingdom “supports all efforts aimed at reaching a just and comprehensive solution” to the conflict, reported Arab News.

Dr Gargash’s statements came shortly after it was confirmed that Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, will at the invitation of US President Donald Trump head to Washington on September 15 to sign a peace treaty with Israel.

As per the Abraham Accord agreed by the the two nations last month, Israel will cease further annexation of Palestinian territories in exchange for the UAE establishing ties and recognising the state of Israel.

The UAE is only the third Arab state, after Egypt and Jordan, to establish ties with the state of Israel.
