From vision to reality: The transformational journey of Emirates Park Zoo and Resort

Emirates Park Zoo and Resort has successfully combined education with entertainment to promote environmental stewardship and sustainability in the country. Over the years, the facility has implemented various initiatives focused on conservation, community engagement and sustainability, in alignment with the UAE’s vision of becoming a global destination for tourism.

Dr Walid Shaaban, Group CEO of Emirates Park Zoo and Resort talks to Gulf Business about managing a pioneering animal conservation facility, creating an education and entertainment model called “edutainment” as he seeks to increase animal welfare awareness, and evolving to include dynamic revenue streams, for the facility.

Q. What role does Emirates Park Zoo and Resort play in the UAE’s tourism matrix? 

Situated in the heart of Abu Dhabi, Emirates Park Zoo and Resort not only serves as a premier family destination but also contributes significantly to the country’s tourism appeal.

As a facility, it has pioneered the conservation-through-education model in the country, offering visitors a unique opportunity to connect with wildlife in a responsible and enriching environment. 

Q. How many animals, birds, and plants do you have and how do you balance your revenue streams with the cost of managing such a facility? 

Emirates Park Zoo and Resort is home to a diverse array of wildlife, from elephants to bees, encompassing approximately 220 different species. This includes mammals like hippopotamuses and ferrets, various reptiles, birds of prey, tropical species, and fish, each contributing to our commitment to conservation, education, and research.

Ensuring the well-being and care of our animals is paramount, and to afford this, we have developed a commercial aspect that supports our high standards of operation. 

This includes the resort, restaurants, gift shop, and other commercial arms. 

Q. What are the visitor numbers in the park? 

Over the past year, we achieved a notable 26 per cent increase in visitor numbers from 2022 to 2023 and continue to grow in 2024. Our visitor demographic comprises approximately 69 per cent UAE residents and 31 per cent international tourists.

Among UAE residents, our visitors are predominantly from Abu Dhabi, accounting for 65 per cent of our local guests, with Dubai residents making up the remaining 35 per cent.

Q. Tell us about your future expansion plans. 

We are following a 5-year master plan to keep Emirates Park Zoo and Resort dynamic and innovative. We are set to open a World Butterfly Park, a new concept showcasing the stories of tiny creatures.

Additionally, we will introduce a mini safari, a first in the Middle East. We will also be the first zoo to offer 360-degree animal exhibits, displaying animals in their natural habitats from different angles.

Q. What are the challenges with running a modern zoo in a hot and arid climate like the UAE? 

Operating a zoo in a hot climate has challenges similar to those in extreme cold climates but requires opposite solutions. In cold climates, heating systems are essential, whereas in hot climates like ours, cooling systems are necessary.

Key challenges include maintaining optimal temperature and humidity levels, implementing efficient water conservation strategies, and ensuring comfort with shaded areas, cooling systems, and hydration stations. 

Q. What initiatives have increased visitor numbers at the park? 

Under my stewardship, we’ve implemented key initiatives to enhance visitor engagement. We follow core values of excellence in animal care, customer care, staff care, and environmental care. 

Our dynamic team focuses on innovative programmes and personalised services to create lasting guest experiences.

New exhibits immerse visitors in interactive learning, fostering curiosity for the natural world. Strategic marketing via digital platforms and partnerships has expanded our reach, boosting awareness and footfall.

Q. What are the retail challenges for the facility? 

Managing retail at Emirates Park Zoo and Resort involves maintaining a diverse product range that appeals to our visitors’ interests. Key priorities include balancing inventory to meet demand without overstocking, ensuring competitive pricing, and creating inviting retail spaces. 

Q. What strategies does the organisation implement for eco-tourism and making its revenue streams future-proof? 

We implement a strategy called “Camel Steps,” focusing on patient and steady sustainability moves. Our composting machine converts organic waste into compost, reducing our environmental footprint and saving costs. The ‘Recycled Jewellery’ initiative supports sustainability and local artisans, promoting upcycling through educational programs. We enhance community recycling efforts with Sparklo reverse vending machines across the zoo.

Our Bee Experience Programme and Elephant Poo to Paper initiative promote biodiversity and conservation while offering engaging educational experiences.

Replacing plastic bottles with eco-friendly alternatives aligns with the UAE’s strategy for reducing single-use plastics. Collaborative programmes with universities deepen wildlife understanding and enhance animal welfare practices, contributing to public engagement and “edutainment”.
