The new Threads app launched under the Instagram umbrella by Meta has already surpassed 100 million users. Threads launched Wednesday, and has achieved this milestone in less than a week.

The number of users for Threads can be found in the Instagram app, which tracks the size of the new signups.

Threads beat ChatGPT handily, which took over two months to achieve 100 million users.

Threads has directly impacted traffic on Twitter. According to Similarweb, web traffic to Twitter was down five per cent for the first two full days after Threads was launched compared with the previous week. The company said Twitter’s web traffic is down 11 per cent compared with the same days in 2022.

Meanwhile, Threads had over 100 million posts within two days of its launch.

Key differences between Threads and Twitter

1. Twitter recently introduced the ability for its premium users to edit tweets. Threads, as of now, does not offer the functionality to edit posts once they have been published. Users on Threads are currently required to either delete the post or create a new one if they wish to make changes.
2. Twitter provides users with the flexibility to access its platform through any web browser while Threads, on the other hand, is designed as a mobile application. As of now, Threads does not offer a web version for browsing.
3. The absence of hashtags in Threads is also a notable feature. While hashtags are widely used on platforms like Twitter, and Instagram, Threads currently lacks this feature.
4. Threads operates differently from Twitter in terms of its feed structure. Unlike Twitter, which offers separate feeds such as “For You” and “Following,” Threads currently provides a single feed that includes trending posts and content from followers.
5. Threads also lacks a direct messaging feature. Users cannot privately message each other on the platform. Threads says it has implemented end-to-end encryption which to protect user privacy.
