Saudi Arabia’s consulate general in Los Angeles is following up on the investigation in the death of Saudi scholarship student Bandar Al-Barqi in San Diego, it said in a statement.

Al-Barqi was found dead in his apartment on February 1 in San Diego, California.

The consulate said it had appointed an attorney to follow up on the case, which is still under investigation.

The final report has not yet been issued by local authorities on the cause of death, the statement said.

The consulate also clarified that – contrary to some local media reports, it had not issued any statement related to the death of the student.

It confirmed that the student’s cause of death will be revealed immediately after the issuance of the final report.

Last week, local daily Saudi Gazette quoted the student’s father as saying that he was most likely “strangled by a vacuum cleaner wire”.

He also alleged that his son had expressed fears for his life during his last telephone call and that he had been killed by “some of his colleagues”.
