The world’s biggest camel hospital has been inaugurated in the Saudi Arabian city of Buraidah, in Qassim.

The Salam Veterinary hospital, opened on Sunday, also has a research facility to diagnose diseases related to camels.

The project, worth SAR100m, stretches over 70,000 square metres and is hoped to improve veterinary facilities in the kingdom.

The check-up facilities at the hospital can handle 144 camels while the sheds can accommodate 4,000 riding camels at the same time.

The hospital’s specialised central laboratories have over 60 pieces of equipment and devices, that can conduct 160 types of analyses.

It also has a young camels unit, an ICU, CT scan unit, and surgical theatres.

It is expected to employ 200 to 300 staff, according to media reports.

Among the main goals for establishing the hospital is to improve the breeding and fertilisation process in camels, with the facility featuring a specialist centre for embryonic transfer technology. The hospital aims to help raise the rate of fetal production in camels from 100 to 700.
