Just as tennis fans were recovering from the news of tennis legend Serena Williams announcing her retirement on September 2, Roger Federer has also said he’s quitting professional tennis at the age of 41.

Federer announced on September 15 that he would call it a day after playing at the fifth edition of the Laver Cup, which will be held at The O2 in London from September 23-25.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion has played 1,500 matches over a 24-year career in the sport.

The tennis player has been struggling with injuries for the last three years, deciding it was finally time to step away from the game, as he was aware of  his “body’s capacities and limits”.

Federer made the announcement via a letter posted on social media: “Of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years, the greatest, without a doubt, has been the people I’ve met along the way: my friends, my competitors, and most of all the fans who give the sport its life. Today, I want to share some news with all of you…”

“As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form.”

Federer’s touching address on social media saw him thank his family, team, friends, fans and the game of tennis.
