Japanese capital Tokyo ranks first worldwide, with a population of 37.2 million.

As of 2015, up to 54 per cent of the world’s population resides in urban areas, according to data from the United Nations.
Asia, despite its lower level of urbanisation, is home to 53 per cent of the world’s urban population and to the world’s most populated city.
Tokyo, Japan’s capital city, tops the chart with 37.2 million dwellers, and has remained the world’s most populated city since 1990.
Even though the UN has predicted a decline in the city’s population, it is expected that Tokyo will retain its position until 2030 with 38.7 million inhabitants.
Going ahead, the United Nations predicts that the world’s urban population will continue growing rapidly, and could reach up to 6.3 billion by 2050.
