He was appointed Grand Sheikh of Al-Azhar in 2010 having formerly been its president and also served two years as the most powerful cleric in Egypt as its Grand Mufti. An advocate of traditional Islam, he was ranked the world’s most influential Muslim by The Muslim500 list in 2013.
