Qatar Must Take Responsibility For Its Workers – Blatter

Sepp Blatter has said Qatari companies must take responsibility for their workers ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

Speaking in Brazil after the sport’s governing body met for the final time this year – and ahead of the 2014 world cup draw – Blatter said FIFA must help the Gulf state to organise one of the world’s biggest events.

“I am sure at the end of the day that football will be the winner. At the end of the day we will show the world that we can create good working conditions,” he said to reporters.

“If there is a will, there is a way. And we have the will. I will find these solutions.”

Last month, Blatter condemned the working conditions in Qatar calling them ‘unacceptable’ after an Amnesty International report claimed widespread abuse against migrant workers in the country.

Blatter said fair workings conditions must be introduced “quickly, consistently and on a sustained basis in Qatar” after meeting with Michael Sommer, president of the International Trade Union Confederation, on the matter.

Blatter also met with the Emir of Qatar in November to discuss the concerns.

“The operating companies in Qatar have to assume responsibilities for their workers,” Blatter said in Brazil. “Now we need to make sure that the pleas of the unions will be implemented.

“Now we have to work together to move forward and make adequate to take steps to help Qatar to organise this competition and the people who work there.”
