Mobile technology company OPPO recently showcased its OPPO X 2021 concept phone with a rollable and expandable display in the UAE.

It came a few months after the global unveiling of the phone at the OPPO Inno Day 2020 event held in Shenzhen last November.

The OPPO X 2021 rollable concept handset has a flexible display and structural stacking mechanism.
It features OPPO’s three proprietary technologies, including the Roll Motor powertrain, 2-in-1 Plate, and self-developed Warp Track high-strength screen laminate.

As a result, it leads to a continuously variable OLED display that measures as small as 6.7 inches and as large as 7.4 inches when fully expanded. The phone can be expanded by siding your finger over the power button.

OPPO has attempted to ensure that resolution of the screen does not suffer when it is either extended or retracted. The phone therefore reportedly has resolution specs of a maximum of 1785×2592 and a minimum of 1175×2592.

When using social media apps, the Parallel Spaces Mode on the OPPO X 2021 automatically displays messages and your content feed over dual displays.

The device features a scroll-like, expandable display that removes the “hard folding” typically associated with foldable smartphones.

Oppo says that the device is tested for up to 100,000 retractions and extensions. On average, it can last for around five-and-half years. For those who use their phone more extensively, the rollable feature is expected to operate flawlessly for between 2-3 years.

Additionally, the phone features two Spot TOF 3D cameras that lend the bokeh effect on photos and videos while supporting basic coverage of AR indoors. OPPO says that in the future, these will enable the phone to be used for combined AR/VR features.

OPPO has yet to confirm any dates on when this device will make it to market or potential prices of it.

In March this year, OPPO launched its Reno5 Pro 5G device in the UAE that features a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED, priced at Dhs1,999.
