Home Industry Technology OPPO unveils under-screen camera technology The company has been working on USC technology since 2018 by Divsha Bhat August 10, 2021 OPPO has introduced its next-generation under-screen camera (USC) technology for smartphones. The innovative approach discretely puts the front-facing camera under the smartphone display in a way that maintains the integrity and uniformity of the entire screen, both during usage and while in standby, by combining hardware innovation with AI algorithms. The new solution addresses a number of technical and manufacturing issues that have hampered under-screen camera technology since its inception. Resolving difficulties such as uneven display quality in the screen area above the under-screen camera, and poor picture quality caused by the screen obstructing the camera, as well as issues with product reliability and lifespan are examples of breakthroughs. Unlike earlier generations of under-screen cameras, which reduced the pixel density of the display immediately above the camera, Oppo claims to have maintained a consistent pixel density of 400 PPI throughout the whole screen. A new pixel architecture that reduces the size of each pixel makes this possible. Furthermore, by using a transparent, thinner wire material, the amount of light that reaches the camera is maximized. OPPO has also unveiled a new solution based on proprietary screen technology, in which each pixel circuit is responsible for only one pixel (“1-to-1”). When paired with their exact algorithmic compensation technique, this allows them to accurately regulate the chromaticity and brightness of the whole panel with a 2 percent variation. The under-screen camera solution is also able to provide display compensation in the under-screen camera area of screen, improving the screen’s lifespan by up to 50 per cent.
