Home Brand View On the road to an electric future: Mercedes-Benz The luxury carmaker’s EQ fleet will offer electric and hybrid alternatives in each of its model segments – from compact cars to large family SUVs by Gulf Business December 29, 2020 We are living in the future of mobility – and that future is electric. Luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz understands this and is leading the charge. As part of its Ambition 2039 plan, Mercedes-Benz is embarking on a holistic, sustainable and corporate strategy that will position the automaker as the premier provider of electric mobility solutions. It is launching an ‘electric offensive’ through the release of advanced vehicles with access to a wide scale, user-friendly and convenient charging network. Setting Mercedes-Benz on a path toward zero emissions, Ambition 2039 includes electric vehicles, further efficiency improvements through hybridisation, and the development of new vehicles with advanced state-of-the-art internal combustion engines. The company is investing 10bn euros in the expansion of its electric fleet and more than 1bn euros in the development of battery production alone. As part of this strategy, Mercedes-Benz has introduced its EQ range, which will offer electric and hybrid alternatives to customers in each of its model segments – from compact cars to large family SUVs. The EQ range has been created to appeal to the demands of modern customers who recognise the necessity of lowering their carbon footprint and are keen on driving a highly technical and advanced hybrid or electric vehicle. The EQ vehicles offer all of the benefits, convenience, luxury and reliability of a Mercedes-Benz. There are varying degrees of electrification that fall underneath Mercedes-Benz EQ: EQ Boost (electrified combustion engines), EQ Power (plug-in hybrids) and EQ (all-electric vehicles). With the recently launched EQC here in the region, Mercedes-Benz has produced an everyday five-seater SUV that spearheads this new, but hugely desirable, segment of cars. The EQC’s 471km electronic-only range (NEDC) combined with a 40-minute charging time at rapid charging stations and zero CO2 emissions, makes it the premier choice for motorists who don’t want to compromise on journey choice, distance travelled, drive quality or their environmental beliefs. The EQ range only represents the first steps towards Mercedes-Benz achieving its environmental ambitions. Over the next 20 years, Mercedes-Benz aims to have a carbon-neutral passenger car fleet, with plug-in hybrids or all-electric vehicles making up more than 50 per cent of its car sales by 2030. Some of the key vehicle-related milestones for Ambition 2039 include: • By 2022: Several electrified variants in all segments of Mercedes-Benz Cars • By 2025: Up to 25 per cent of unit sales to be accounted for by all-electric vehicles • By 2030: Achieving more than 50 per cent of car unit sales with plug-in hybrids or all-electric vehicles • By 2039: A CO2-neutral fleet of new cars The Mercedes-Benz green strategy also aligns with the ambitions of the UAE government and nations around the region, who are embracing the need to make electric vehicles a practical and desirable option. In Dubai, electric charging stations are becoming common place as a key element of the Dubai Green Mobility initiative. Plug-in rapid charging points can be found in malls and service stations while incentives such as free-parking for electric vehicles until July 2022 are helping raise public awareness and increase the appeal of zero-emission transport. Electric car owners who are registered to the EV Green Charger programme can also recharge their vehicles for free at DEWA public charging stations until December 31, 2021. With growing demand from customers around the region and the world, plus active support from the authorities, Mercedes-Benz’s EQ fleet and electric ambitions should experience no bumps in the road as the company establishes itself as the premium electric car manufacturer of choice.
