Home GCC Oman Omantel signs MoU with Microsoft to accelerate innovation Microsoft will work with Omantel to develop capabilities required for their workforce, assist with streamlining operations and accelerating growth by Zainab Mansoor May 26, 2022 Omani telecommunications services provider Omantel signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Microsoft to collaborate on accelerating ICT innovation. The innovation would support the telco’s digital transformation strategy, and streamline and improve services across the sultanate. Microsoft will work with Omantel to develop capabilities required for their workforce, assist with streamlining operations and business support systems, transforming customer experience and accelerating innovation and growth. Under the new agreement, Microsoft will engage with regional and international solution providers to bring the latest innovations in digital transformation, digitisation, cloud adoption, big data and data science, AI, cybersecurity, capacity building and skilling to Oman. Microsoft Oman and Bahrain country manager, Saif Hilal Al Hosni said; “By uniting our innovations with Omantel’s expertise we will be able to ensure greater resilience and efficiencies for consumers and businesses across Oman. This new agreement builds on our longstanding partnership with Omantel to accelerate technology adoption and empower people and organisations in the country to achieve more.” Additionally, both entities will partner on the development of ideation workshops with technical and business stakeholders to evaluate technology ideas and proposals and collaborate to deliver technology awareness sessions centered around new Microsoft technologies. Omantel will provide support for the required cloud infrastructure to host the technology workshops and proof of concept, facilitate the connection with business and technical stakeholders in target departments, and provide technical and financial support for the potential implementation of the different solutions. The telecommunications industry has gained significant traction as connectivity continues to underpin efforts to realise a digital economy. According to McKinsey, digital transformation can yield a more than 30 per cent increase in gross profit for telecommunications operators. Earlier this year, Saudi’s stc Group, UAE-based e&, Zain Group, Batelco, du and Omantel signed a memorandum of understanding to accelerate cooperation to protect the environment, tackle climate change challenges and reduce carbon footprint.
