Mubadala Energy, the international energy company headquartered in Abu Dhabi and operator of the South Andaman Gross Split, has reported a significant gas discovery from the Tangkulo-1 Exploration well, drilled offshore North Sumatra, Indonesia.

This discovery, marking the second deep-water well operated by Mubadala Energy, comes after the major find at the Layaran-1 well in the same region, reported state news agency WAM.

The Tangkulo-1 well, drilled to a depth of 3,400 meters in 1,200 meters of water depth, encountered an 80-meter gas column in a high-quality Oligocene sandstone reservoir.

The confirmation of this discovery was supported by extensive data gathering, including core samples, wireline logging, sidewall core, and pressure and fluid sampling, added the report.

The well’s performance during testing was noteworthy, with a flow rate of 47 million standard cubic feet per day (mmscf/d) of high-quality gas and 1,300 barrels of condensate. Despite testing limitations, the estimated well capacity stands at 80-100 mmscf/d of gas and over 2,000 barrels of condensate.

Mansoor Mohammed Al Hamed, CEO of Mubadala Energy, expressed optimism about the discovery’s transformative potential, stating, “This game-changing discovery promises to transform Indonesia’s and Southeast Asia’s energy landscape and demonstrates that South Andaman is one of the world’s most exciting energy plays.”

With an 80 per cent working interest in South Andaman, Mubadala Energy holds the largest net acreage in the area.

The Tangkulo-1 discovery aligns with the company’s natural gas-focused strategy and serves as a significant milestone in the region’s development.

It unlocks further potential in the block’s southern region and indicates the presence of additional prospective gas resources in nearby structures.

The discovery, coupled with the previous success at Layaran-1, adds material contingent volume to Mubadala Energy‘s portfolio and sets the stage for continued organic growth through additional exploration and appraisal activities in the region.
