A massive fire broke out in an Ajman souq on Wednesday evening and was brought under control in three hours.

No casualties have been reported.

The souq has been closed for four months due to Covid-19 safety measures, official news agency WAM reported.

“Civil Defence units and 25 police and ambulance vehicles responded immediately, reaching the incident site within three minutes and were able to isolate neighbouring buildings and bring the fire under control,” said Major General Sheikh Sultan bin Abdullah Al Nuaimi, commander-in-chief of the Ajman Police.

Upon reaching the site, police evacuated the entire building.

Videos on social media showed plumes of smoke rising from the building.

Investigations are currently underway into the cause of the fire.
