Loujain Al Hathloul

AL HATHLOUL AND her friend, Maysa al-Amoudi, were detained for more than a month at the end of last year for defying a ban on women driving and voicing opinions online. The two have since been sent to a court established to try terrorism cases in Riyadh, making their detention the longest of any female drivers in Saudi history. Both are strong supporters of a grass roots movement to repeal the ban on women drivers, and together have more than 360,000 followers.
