Iraqi-born architect Hadid came under fire this year when her design for Qatar’s Al-Wakrah stadium was described as looking like female genitalia, while her concept for Tokyo’s 2020 Olympic was considered too large and is now set to be scaled back. She was also tasked with designing a super yacht prototype for German shipbuilders Blohm+Voss, her work drawing equal levels of adoration and scorn. Despite these setbacks the Hadid name is still well respected with her contemporary designs appearing across the world, from London’s Olympic Aquatics Centre to opera houses in Dubai and Guangzhou. She also holds the honour of being the first woman to win the Pritzker Prize for architecture in 2004.
