Bahwan’s estimated $3.7bn fortune was primarily built in the construction and oil industries, having started out with his late brother Saud as a small-time trader in Oman’s capital, Muscat. They eventually formed the giant conglomerate Suhail and Saud Bahwan (SSB), before dividing the business in 2002. Today, as chairman of his eponymous group, Bahwan has a less active role in the company – passing most management duties to his daughter Amal in 2016. But his philanthropic activities continue to ensure his influence is felt strongly across Oman and beyond through his Suhail Bahwan Charitable Foundation.
