Kuwait’s cabinet has decided to allow domestic helpers to start returning to the country from December 7, local media reported.

The cabinet also set the cost of each returning worker at KD270 to cover quarantine expenses, Kuwait Times quoted government spokesman Tareq Al-Mazrem as saying.

However, that figure does not include airfare, Mazrem said.

The report comes after Kuwait banned flights from several countries including India, the Philippines and Sri Lanka in August, with expatriate workers stranded abroad unable to return.

While officials had indicated last month that domestic workers would be permitted to return from December, they also confirmed that a two-week institutional quarantine would be mandatory for all those returning to Kuwait.

Sponsors will need to register details of the domestic workers online take care of all the financial details including transportation and health tests.

According to media reports, roughly 80,000 domestic workers are expected to return to Kuwait once flights resume.

Kuwait has seen the number of new coronavirus cases reduce in the past week, with recovery rates also improving.

It reported 209 new Covid-19 cases, two additional deaths as well as 658 recoveries on Monday.
