Home GCC UAE In pics: UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan with world leaders Sheikh Khalifa became President of the UAE in 2004 after the passing away of Sheikh Zayed by Gulf Business May 13, 2022 UAE President, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, passed away on Friday, May 13. Sheikh Khalifa was born in Al Muwaiji Fort, Al Ain, in 1948. When the UAE was founded in 1971, Sheikh Khalifa assumed the position of Deputy Prime Minister in the first federal cabinet. When Sheikh Zayed passed away on November 2, 2004, Sheikh Khalifa succeeded him as ruler of the emirate. Soon after, the Federal Supreme Council elected him President of the UAE for a term of five years and, in 2009, he was re-elected. Sheikh Khalifa was a distinguished statesman who met with several world leaders over the past few years. During his tenure, he also advocated strong international bilateral ties, and last year, made a historic visit to the UK to meet with state leaders.
