The policy aims to reduce light pollution in order to “preserve the clarity and beauty of the emirate’s night skies”, as per the official statement. Here’s what you need to know about the new ‘General Dark Sky Policy’ initiative What is the Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy? The Abu Dhabi Dark Sky Policy is an initiative launched by the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) aimed at reducing light pollution in the emirate of Abu Dhabi. It seeks to preserve the clarity and beauty of the night skies by implementing responsible lighting practices. Why was the policy launched? The policy was launched to address the escalating concern of light pollution in Abu Dhabi. By presenting a blueprint for responsible lighting practices, it aims to create a model for sustainable development and foster awareness among the community. Who will the policy apply to? The policy applies to both the public and private sectors, excluding cultural festivals and events. It targets outdoor lighting equipment in various settings, including public buildings, streets, parks, beaches, commercial organisations, and residential areas.
