Abu Dhabi is strengthening road safety measures and improving traffic infrastructure ahead of the new school year, with authorities combining stricter enforcement around school buses with the reopening of a major interchange linking key residential areas.
As families return to their daily school routines, Abu Dhabi Police has reminded motorists that failing to stop for a school bus displaying its side-mounted “STOP” arm can result in a Dhs1,000 fine and 10 traffic black points, a WAM report said.

The measure is designed to give students a safe path to cross the road and protect them while boarding or leaving school buses.
Police stressed that student safety is a shared responsibility and called on motorists to remain particularly cautious and vigilant around schools and school buses. Drivers were also urged to comply with traffic regulations designed to create a safer environment for students.

E20 Interchange reopens ahead of school traffic
At the same time, the Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has reopened the interchange connecting Khalifa City and Zayed City over the E20, ahead of the start of the school year.
The reopening will give motorists access to two additional lanes on a significant section of the highway to and from Abu Dhabi City, increasing capacity to five lanes in each direction.
Most of the western section of the project has now been completed, while further improvements are planned for the eastern section. A new interchange and additional lanes are scheduled to open in the first quarter of 2027.
The wider E20 development project will expand the arterial road from three to five lanes in both directions and includes two new bridges, 10.5 kilometres of ramps and loops, 1.5 kilometres of internal roads and eight traffic-light junctions aimed at improving safety across Khalifa City and neighbouring districts.
