Home Climate EMSTEEL Group to co-chair IRENA’s Decarbonisation Alliance The alliance aims to foster collaboration among companies to develop decarbonisation strategies aligned with national net-zero commitments by Gulf Business September 30, 2024 Image: Supplied EMSTEEL Group has been appointed as co-chair of the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation (AFID), a global industrial alliance led by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). The announcement was made during AFID’s event titled “Decarbonising Hard-to-Abate Sectors with Renewables: Accelerating Net-Zero Ambitions” at Climate Week NYC, the largest annual gathering focused on climate action, which brings together business leaders and policymakers to discuss strategies for achieving decarbonisation goals. The Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation aims to foster dialogue and collaboration among companies to develop robust decarbonisation strategies aligned with national net-zero commitments. EMSTEEL will co-chair alongside Siemens Energy, taking over from TATA Steel in this leadership role. The alliance will serve as a global platform for exchanging insights, experiences, and best practices. Other UAE companies participating in the alliance include Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA), and Tadweer Group. The new co-chair position underscores EMSTEEL’s commitment to sustainability and its role in driving decarbonisation in the industrial sector. The group aims to promote a low-carbon supply chain in collaboration with industry partners. Engineer Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi, group CEO of EMSTEEL, said, “We are honoured to be co-chairing the Alliance for Industry Decarbonisation. This prestigious position provides us with a global platform to enhance the dialogue surrounding industrial sustainable practices for a sustainable future.” He highlighted EMSTEEL’s commitment to showcasing the UAE’s net-zero achievements as a model for global industrial sustainability. EMSTEEL has received accolades for its decarbonisation efforts Aligned with the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 Strategy, the group has made substantial progress in decarbonising its products and supply chain, achieving a 10 per cent year-on-year reduction in its carbon footprint. The group has received global accolades for its efforts, including recognition as a 2024 Steel Sustainability Champion by the World Steel Association and being named one of the top five steel producers globally by the World Economic Forum for its efforts to decarbonise the steel value chain. Additionally, the group was awarded the Sustainable Manufacturer Award by the UAE’s Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology (MoIAT).
