In a landmark move, Dubai Municipality has partnered with leading global companies to create a project that transforms waste into sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

This initiative, signed at the World Governments Summit 2024, with ENOC, BESIX Middle East, and Marubeni Middle East and Africa Power, paves the way for cleaner skies and a more sustainable future for the aviation industry.

The project utilises advanced technology to treat mixed solid municipal waste, organic waste, and even green hydrogen from sewage treatment, converting them into the sustainable fuel.

This step aligns with the UAE’s commitment to environmental protection and carbon reduction, specifically targeting the ‘zero waste’ objective and emission cuts in the aviation sector.

The project is set for implementation in July 2025.

SAF project aligned with Dubai and UAE environment targets

Dawoud Al Hajri, director general of Dubai Municipality, Al Hajri said the initiative will play a significant role in advancing UAE’s national objectives by expediting carbon removal from the aviation sector. “It will also assist in the waste management operations in Dubai, aligning with the strategic targets of the UAE Net Zero by 2050 strategic initiative, the UAE Circular Economy Policy 2021-2031, and the 2031 National Hydrogen Policy.’

“The success of the project under study, set for implementation in July 2025, hinges on having the necessary technology and essential materials within Dubai Municipality to produce SAF. These materials include waste and treat sewage water. The project will also involve several investors and other supportive and strategic partners.”
