Passenger traffic through Dubai International Airport rose 15.1 per cent from a year earlier to 5.7 million people in October, airport authorities said on Tuesday.

Percentage growth rates were particularly high for traffic with eastern Europe and Australasia. The airport, one of the world’s busiest, saw 55 million passengers in the first 10 months of 2013, an increase of 15.9 per cent.

Dubai International handled 208,695 tonnes of cargo in October, up three per cent from a year earlier; volume in the first 10 months was up 6.2 per cent to 1.99 million tonnes.

At the Dubai Airshow last week, Dubai’s Emirates airline announced orders for 50 additional Airbus A380 superjumbos and 150 Boeing jets, in a bet on further rapid expansion of Dubai’s aviation industry in coming years.
