Daily Insider: Saudi gains momentum with World Expo win

Following in the footsteps of Dubai, Riyadh has a huge opportunity to put itself on the global map with World Expo 2030.

The announcement overnight that Saudi Arabia’s capital city Riyadh edged Busan (South Korea) and Rome to secure the rights to host the 2030 World Expo is another feather in the cap of this emerging economic giant.

Dubai’s hosting of the World Expo 2020 (in 2021 after Covid-19) was a catalyst that sparked off new infrastructure projects, provided a tailwind for the real estate sector and which stimulated renewed tourism — especially in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic.

World Expo 2030, no doubt, will have an equally positive impact for Riyadh. Already, Saudi Arabia is among the fastest growing economies in the world, and the economic success story there — by all accounts — is only just getting started. For 2024, the kingdom’s GDP growth is forecast to expand by 4.6 per cent, according to Moody’s.

For the Saudis, this presents a new opportunity to put that country on the map in ways that have never been seen before. This can only be a good thing for the region.
