Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) inaugurated a key bridge on Sunday, June 9, as part of a major infrastructure project aimed at improving traffic flow in the emirate.

The newly opened two-lane bridge is part of the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project, a large-scale initiative encompassing the construction of four bridges with a total length of 2,874 meters and a combined capacity of 17,600 vehicles per hour.

“This project is a testament to Dubai’s commitment to developing its transportation infrastructure to meet the demands of a growing population and urban development,” said Mattar Al Tayer, director-general and chairman of the Board of Executive Directors at the RTA.

The completed bridge spans 666 metres and aims to specifically improve traffic flow by separating vehicles travelling from Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to the service road leading to Jumeirah Golf Estate and Dubai Production City.

Al Tayer highlighted the project’s strategic importance, stating it aligns with directives from Dubai’s leadership to enhance the emirate’s mobility network.

Upon completion, the entire Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project is expected to significantly reduce travel times in the area.

Motorists travelling from Garn Al Sabkha Street to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Qusais and Deira can expect a 40 per cent reduction in travel time, going from 20 minutes to 12 minutes during peak hours.

Travel time is also expected to decrease by 70 per cent for those using Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road towards Al Yalayes Street in the direction of Jebel Ali Port, with journeys dropping from 21 minutes to just seven minutes.

Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project highlights

Beyond the newly opened bridge, the Garn Al Sabkha-Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road Intersection Improvement Project comprises:

  • Construction of three additional bridges: A 943-metre bridge facilitating traffic flow between Sheikh Zayed Road and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road,  a 601-metre bridge serving traffic from Garn Al Sabkha Street towards Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Qusais/Deira, and a 664-metre bridge, enabling smooth traffic flow by eliminating interference from vehicles heading north on Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road.
  • Seven kilometres of road works, including improvements to surface intersections on the service road.
  • Installation of streetlights, traffic signals, traffic management systems, stormwater drainage networks, and irrigation systems.

The project aligns with the RTA’s master plan to develop strategic east-west traffic corridors and arterial roads, contributing to Dubai’s overall mobility infrastructure and supporting development projects across the city.
