Boeing has displayed the first B787-9, the second member of the fuel-efficient Dreamliner family.

At 20 feet longer than the 787-8, the 787-9 will extend the 787 family in both capacity and range, carrying 40 more passengers an additional 300 nautical miles (555 km).

With the second and third airplanes in final assembly, Boeing will be hopeful the second version will have a smoother entry to market than the first, which was delivered late and has since been plagued with issues.

First delivery to launch customer Air New Zealand is set for mid-2014.

Etihad has 41 B787s on order including 10 of the 787-9 version.
